2007 Guys’ Night Out

September 22, 2007

What an awesome night at our annual Guys’ Night Out church event! We started out the evening with pizza at CiCi’s Pizza and there the college guys got their first surprise of the evening — their meals were paid for! Then we headed over to Alley Cats bowling alley and there the college guys got their second surprise of the evening — their 2 hours of bowling was paid for! Needless to say, these guys were completely taken aback!!

Now both teams (the ‘old’ guys and the ‘young’ guys) had been talking their smack for several weeks prior to this event. I made sure to make a point each time to remind the ‘young guys’ of the brutal beating that they took the last time we had our bowling outing! So when the bowling started I could sense right off the bat that these boys were serious this time and that they came to win!!

This was an awesome night of fun and fellowship! How awesome it was watching everyone mix and mingle the whole evening through! All the cheering and jeering we were doing was really drawing a crowd at times. Even the bowling alley staff stopped by throughout the evening to watch and cheer everyone on!! But alas, the evening came to an end and no one really wanted to leave! Yet we parted ways to rest and get prepared for Sunday.

Now Sunday morning started just like any other Sunday morning … grunts and groans (a little more than usual due to the bowling from the night before!) … hot coffee … and then getting ready to head up to church. Once I got to church, the questions started flying!!! Which team won? Who had the best average? Etc. Etc. But I told everyone that they had to wait until the announcements were being made during the service before I would let anyone know anything!! Oh it was killing them for sure! So during the announcements, I got up in front of the church and did my usual speech … thanking everyone for their prayers and to some for their financial support … acknowledging who had the best average from each team … and who had the most strikes and the most spares … etc. etc.

But now the time everyone had been waiting for … the announcement of the winner!! I gave my best theatrical pause and told everyone that for the second time, the ‘old guys’ pulled off another victory!!! Some people cheered while some hung their heads in shame! But oh did it feel good announcing this victory!!! I just wanted to do my happy dance but it might have gotten me excommunicated!! (hahahaha)

Afterwards you could tell that regardless of the outcome, the true victory had been won — that of getting the older guys and the younger guys together for true brotherly fellowship! The interesting thing is that they want to have this event again real soon! Everyone truly realized that they are cared for and prayed for. It’s events like this that helps everyone feel special and more a part of the church than ever before!

Check out this short video!!

On a men’s ministry website that I am a member of (Out of the Wild), I had put up a prayer request for this event on the message board. The following are the replies to that request:

My request:

Y’all be in prayer for our annual Guys’ Night Out event!! It’s an evening of dinner and bowling wherein us “older” guys school the “younger” guys. What are we schooling them in you ask? They are being schooled on how to be humble when they are being broken down and feeling defeated!!!

hahahahaha!!!!

It’s a great event where we sponsor these guys and take them out to dinner and then a few hours of fun on the lanes with some friendly competitions!!

…. and pray that us “older” guys hold up on our end of talking smack and beat these younger guys!!!!

Sounds like fun … and a wonderful opportunity to ‘mentor’ these young ‘uns as well as schooling them. I’ll be in prayer for your event.

Hey Brother,

I wonder what kind of cool stuff Paul did with Timothy to teach him humility? I can hear Paul now, “Hey, Timmy. Not only did you pick the slowest camel in this race, you picked the ugliest one too!”

Y’all are doing a great thing with those younger guys and I pray that God will use this outing to draw them closer to Him. All of us men should sit up and take notice that the future of our churches and our society lie with our youth and it’s our responsibility to mentor them. (I don’t know if the group y’all are taking are actually youth or just younger adults, but when you’re in your 50’s, everybody is youth (haha).

Heavenly Father,
LORD, I come to you in the blessed name of Jesus and lift up my brothers who will be a part of this outing. I pray that each one would be filled with your Holy Spirit and that your love for these young men would flow through them. I pray that relationships would be built and strengthened in the coming days and that these younger brothers would be drawn closer to You. Bless this fellowship LORD to bring glory to You. May each one have a good time in the LORD. Thank you Father for raising up men who have a heart to see other men come to know You.
In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

Y’all have a great time, Brother!

Looking forward to the testimony of the Guy’s night out and the triumph of the ‘old guys’.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Will be praying. Let us know how things turn out.

…. more comments to be posted as they are received. I put these here to show that others are praying and pulling for us all!
